What is MiCA?
The EU passed the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) which went into effect in 2024. The monumental vote set global standards by establishing a regulatory framework that covers crypto-assets, crypto-assets issuers, and crypto-asset service providers.
-
MiCA defines crypto assets as digital representations of value or rights that may be transferred and stored electronically. According to MiCA, crypto assets can be grouped into three categories:
- Utility Tokens
- Asset-Referenced Tokens (ARTs)
- Electronic Money Tokens (EMTs)
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA)
introduced MiCA to institute uniform EU market rules for crypto-assets.
As the new legal framework which will support market integrity and financial stability by regulating public offers of crypto assets.
