Russell Investments was founded on the principle of rigorous manager research. As John Forrest recounts, "Without Nasdaq eVestment we would be facing a lot of legwork to maintain our quality of manager research. It’s absolutely integral to what we do." From the very early days of manually collecting manager performance data, as our business grew and evolved, the scope and volume of information we collected increased. Meeting our needs for that volume and scope required a more systematic, technology driven approach and a search for a scalable data platform.

When Russell Investments issued an RFP to modernize their data collection, Nasdaq eVestment stood out. "You had a really excellent interface, were very willing to work with us, and customize," said Forrest. The partnership enabled Russell Investments to collect data systematically without over burdening managers, integrate seamlessly with internal systems, and access a robust suite of analytics tools.

Over the years, the relationship has deepened. Nasdaq eVestment expanded its global coverage and increased the scope of available data and analytics—critical for Russell Investments’ growing research needs. Forrest noted, "As we have identified new or additional data or analytic needs, eVestment has been great to work with and just make it happen for us. Today, Russell Investments leverages Nasdaq eVestment for manager research, capital markets research, portfolio management and client reporting, amongst other expanding uses.

From the initial transition—"a mammoth effort"—to ongoing support and development, the Nasdaq eVestment team has remained responsive, collaborative, and innovative. Forrest highlighted how the platform enabled more efficient research practices, centralized access to performance, holdings, and analytics, and supported an expanded set of client-facing deliverables. "We’ve been able to leverage some of the tools and reports you produce to better serve our clients," he said.

We couldn’t afford a break in coverage. We had daily interaction with the eVestment team. They really got to work and helped ensure that continuity. That was quite a collaborative achievement.

A Memorable Milestone

One standout moment was the initial transition to Nasdaq eVestment. Russell Investments had to notify 5,000+ managers around the world that the way they were providing data was about to change, dramatically.

As Russell Investments looks to the future, they see Nasdaq eVestment as a key enabler. From exploring APIs to expanding data sourcing and analytics, the partnership continues to evolve. "It’s an expanding business, very dynamic, customer service focused, and always listening to clients," Forrest concluded.
