A simple moving average is plotted on a chart and tracks the change in average price over time. You can have averages track different lengths of time plotted together giving you a better picture of the recent price changes. The shorter the time period for the moving average the closer that moving average will be to the actual price changes. The longer the moving average, the more "smoothed" the line will be.
