The decision by Andrea Leadsom to pull out of the race for Conservative Party leader has resulted in Theresa May becoming the next prime minister. This is likely to be a disappointment to many in the leave camp who wanted one of their supporters to be the next UK leader to negotiate the terms of Brexit. In fact, this is what our preliminary poll indicated, which was that Ms Leadsom was likely to prevail as PM.
In any case, Ms. Leadsom has disqualified herself after making several controversial public statements. May was the candidate of the Party establishment, but it was not clear to us how she would have fared when the full 150,000 members of the party would have voted.
This sets the stage for Brexit and how Ms. May conducts the negotiations will go a long way in not only shaping the British economy but UK politics going forward. Article 50, which states “Any Member State may decide to withdraw from the Union in accordance with its own constitutional requirement,” must be invoked before official discussions on leaving the EU can be initiated. It is generally thought that these discussions could span a couple of years. Some in the EU want to commence negotiations as soon as possible.
This is your chance to express your opinion on Ms. May as prime minister and how she will handle Brexit. As with all of our polls, we would love to hear comments on any or all of the topics in it. Just post them to the box below the survey questions.
