The race for a new Conservative Parrty leader came to an abrupt close on Monday when Andrea Leadsom withdrew, opening the door for Theresa May to become the new prime minister. Judging from a snap poll we conducted, this is not a popular choice among the Leave supporters as they wanted the new prime minster to come from a Brexit, not a Remain supporter (see below for poll results).
As part of our polling, we ask for comments, which are often more revealing than just the numbers. I wish we had enough room for the hundreds of comments that came but those posted below should give a sense of what both supporters and detractors are thinking.
Giving May the benefit of the doubt:
Not my first choice but now they have to pull together and get on with the job of Brexit, the sooner the better we are free of Europe as a control mechanism.
Would have preferred Leadsom however May has said Brexit means Brexit and she is known to stick to her statements.
I don't like her but she is a strong person and seems to stand by her words
Mrs May has openly said Brexit means Brexit and we will leave the EU and there will be no second referendum also she has promised to stop free movement.. that's good enough for me but she needsBrexit campaigners in her cabinet......if she does not follow these through world war 3 will start of in this country... so she needs to get a move on.....
Would have preferred Leadsom, but provided Brexiteers keep pressure on her it should work out OK since after all she will have to eventually face Brexiteers in a General Election if she backslides on terms with EU
Theresa May will seek the best option for UK .She is an experienced bureaucrat and will do her best for her country. Given the circumstances one could not expect much better from a second rate country, as UK currently is.
Still deeply suspicious of her motives, but hope to be proved wrong. Who she selects to negotiate will be telling.
Disappointment with the choice on May as the new Prime Minister
As she was a "remainer" I suspect she will not be as strong as she should be with the EU
I am hopeful she will implement brexit as she says, but i have less confidence with a remain campaigner
The only thing that Theresa May really succeeded in was keeping her head down while the rest of the "Remnants" actively promoted their cause. She was simply hedging her bets in case the "Brexiteers" won.
Millions including myself will now be voting UKIP
Once again the Westminster machine has deprived the party members in the country to vote for their leader. There now needs to be an election.
May is a 'Remainer' and is part of the 'status quo' elite so we can say goodbye to any meaningful 'Brexit'.
For a short version of my view the installing of Ms May has been a stitch up. The Conservative Party members should be furious. The vote between May and Leadsom could have been brought forward then the outcome would have at least looked wholesome. Brexit will be watered down to suit the MPs views. Roll on the next General election then 17.5m people can voice their feelings. Cheers John
In normal circumstances Theresa May would make a good Prime Minister, but I really think she will have to water down any "LEAVERS" requirements so much to get them through Parliament that it will be a waste of time.
I don't trust Teresa May as all MPs voted for her were for remain so she has promised them something and it will cause riots and protests because out voters feeling stitched up so we are all watching the Tories are going to have blood on their hands. People very angry
