St. Jude Medical Inc.STJ recently announced the receipt of CE Mark approval for its Infinity Deep Brain Stimulation ("DBS") System and directional DBS lead, allowing sale in the European market.

The DBS system is a neurosurgical procedure used for the treatment of movement and affective disorders. The treatment procedure involves the implantation of a neurostimulator in the brain which sends electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain. The procedure is widely used to treat patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, tremors and dystonia.

St. Jude's Infinity DBS System will be available in two different sizes and will be the only upgradeable DBS system available in the market. The product comes with Bluetooth wireless technology that will connect the DBS platform with Apple's AAPL digital devices, which will be used as patient and physician controllers. The iPod touch controllers will aid the patients in turning the device on and off and also to change modes. Meanwhile, the iPad Minis will be used by physicians to program the implants.

St. Jude's DBS lead will allow physicians to provide effective stimulation to specific parts of the brain, while avoiding areas that may be vulnerable to side affects. In this regard, the new product scores over conventional leads.

According to a recently published report by Transparency Market Research , with increased incidence of neurological disorders - particularly Parkinson's disease - the global DBS devices market is expected to grow from $1.79 billion in 2014 to $3.21 billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 8.9%. We believe the recent CE Mark for its Infinity platform will help St. Jude capture a bigger share of this expanding market potential.

Earlier this month, another medical device maker, Boston Scientific BSX commercially launched its Vercise Primary Cell ("PC") DBS System in European markets, following the receipt of CE Mark for the same.
