One of the most frustrating things for any small business owner is to have a brilliant website that doesn't receive any traffic and is never seen by anyone. This can be very disheartening, especially if you have spent a lot of time and money to get your website just the way that you want.
The reason behind your lack of traffic is likely to be that your website is not particularly search-engine friendly. It is not enough to submit your website to various search engines and then simply expect the traffic to start pouring in. Search engines are only intelligent to a certain extent and their intelligence and efficacy is reliant on the information on your website.
The search engine is mainly looking for specific keywords on your website that help it to identify and comprehend the purpose of the website or the content it contains. This then allows it to direct the people who are searching for this content to your website. The process of making your website more 'friendly' for the search engines is known as Search Engine Optimisation (or SEO for short).
One of the important things to remember about SEO and keywords is that search engines absolutely love content. This makes it important for you to have a Blog page on your website that will have lot's of relevant keywords, but contained within interesting content. Don't forget that human beings will also have to read this content, so 'keyword-stuffing' is fairly useless and easily detectable by search engines.
Another way of making your website more friendly for the search bots is to get yourself linked as much as possible. The more (relevant) links to your website from reputable sources that the search engines find, the better your rankings will increase. You can often arrange to link reciprocally with websites in your industry as this will benefit you all. Remember to also add your website manually to link directories for maximum impact.
