Previously, Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) and Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) exams could solely be taken at Pearson VUE's sanctioned test centers-in academic institutions, correctional facilities, U.S. military installations, training centers and corporations around the world. However, with this announcement, the tests will be accessible online at select locations.
Online Proctoring
Microsoft plans to do this via a process called "online proctoring". Select examinations can be delivered via the cloud and taken by candidates from any location that meets security requirements.
This new facility will make it easier for candidates, who do not live or work in proximity of a test center, to take the exams. However, the integrity of the certification process will not be compromised on. Real time supervision of the candidates will take place, by Pearson VUE proctors via the standard security protocols (i.e. microphones, webcams etc). The proctor will be trained to detect signs of unethical behavior. The test will also require the aspirant to do a visual sweep of the test-taking environment via the webcam.
During the initial periods, candidates will be allowed to buy online proctored exams for the same price as onsite exams. This will consist of two new MCP exams prepared for IT professionals and developers who adopt Microsoft Azure as the cloud for their modern businesses.
Looking Ahead
Initially, only a limited set of online proctored exams will be made available for U.S. residents. However, Microsoft promises wider availability soon.
Candidates can continue taking tests onsite at either Pearson VUE or Prometric testing centers. However, from Jan. 1, 2015, Pearson VUE will be Microsoft's exclusive global exam provider. Microsoft Office Specialist and academic MTA exams will continue to be delivered by Certiport Inc., which is a Pearson VUE business.
