Medicare Payouts in All 50 States

In the last decade, the number of retirees who receive Medicare benefits to augment their healthcare has increased by 30%, per SmartAsset. Currently, the number of beneficiaries stands at a staggering 61 million.

Recently, SmartAsset also ranked all of the United States by the overall dollar amount of payouts per state, from the most (New York) to the least (Montana). Of additional interest is the state with the highest number of senior Medicare beneficiaries (Georgia) and the lowest (Alaska).

Elsewhere, seniors in Florida have the highest health risks in America, a risk rate that’s approximately 9% higher than the national average; seniors in Wyoming have the lowest risk rate in the country, 23% lower than the national average.

Further, while New York and California have the highest Medicare payouts in the nation, it’s the seniors of Connecticut who visit the emergency room the most — 32.1% of Medicare beneficiaries in The Constitution State visited an ER at least once in 2023. Alabama had the most inpatient incident services in the nation, at 16.3%
