Diane’s journey to her current role was shaped by a nomadic childhood that heightened her adaptability and curiosity. However, it was the unexpected turns in her career that truly defined her resilience and determination. When faced with the challenges of Covid-19, Danie embraced the opportunity to pivot and prove the naysayers wrong, ultimately landing a consulting job. In her quest to make a positive impact and advocate for authentic networking, Diane harnesses curiosity and the power of extending a helping hand. She believes that genuine connections are the compass of this adventure called life, fueled by kindness and generosity.
We asked Diane about how she landed her current job, how she’s grown as a leader since starting in her role, and the advice she would give someone starting out on the journey she’s on.
Q: Tell us about your career background. How has it led you to where you are today?
A: Picture a kid who could find the grocery store in a new city before finding the playground—that was me, moving around a lot during childhood. This curiosity and adaptability naturally led me to a career in teaching networking—valuing relationships just as much as finding that grocery store!
Q: What’s the most impactful career experience you’ve ever had, and how does it impact your work to date?
A: The most impactful career experiences are the ones you don’t see coming. For example, 9/11 and Covid-19—you have no control over them and they impact not only your business, but your life. You can either shut down and panic, or you can see where there’s an opportunity to push forward. Due to Covid-19, I was able to get a job as a consultant, something people told me I would never be able to do because they considered me “unhirable.”
Q: How did you land your current job?
A: It all started with a friendly challenge: "Can you teach a workshop on networking?" I was hesitant at first but ultimately realized networking was all about genuine connections. One workshop led to another. Suddenly, I was sharing my insights with more and more people, writing a book, and being featured in prominent publications.
Q: What piece of advice has played the biggest role in your career so far?
A: Things take longer than you think they’re going to take. When you’re starting a business or new project, you often go full force. However, everything takes so much longer than you would initially expect.
Q: What is the most rewarding part about your current role?
A: Imagine the "a-ha!" moment when someone conquered their fear of networking. That light bulb moment is pure magic for me. Seeing individuals transform, grow, and succeed in their interactions is what makes every day in my role an adventure.
Q: What are the biggest challenges you’re currently facing and how are you solving them?
A: Conquering the perception that networking is a bit "sleazy" is an ongoing adventure. I tackle this challenge by emphasizing authentic connections, sprinkled with a bit of humor and a whole lot of education. Making networking approachable and enjoyable is key.
Q: What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on to date?
A: Without a doubt, writing my books for McGraw Hill. It involved researching, networking, putting my words together, and having the final product in my hands!
Q: How have you grown as a leader since you started this role?
A: Resilience, curiosity, and knowing when to help—these traits have become my trusty sidekicks on this leadership adventure. Every day, I learn new ways to connect with people, ask better questions, and bring out the best in others.
Q: What advice would you give someone starting out on the journey you’re on?
A: Buckle up and enjoy every twist and turn. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Celebrate each triumph, big or small. In this adventure called life, genuine connections are your compass, and kindness is your fuel. Extend a helping hand and open doors for others—these simple acts are like gold in networking and life. And always carry an imaginary "kindness toolkit"—you'll be surprised how far a small gesture can go.
