More often than not, developer's conferences are about speeds and feeds with much focus on what the firm is creating. IntelINTC manages to take this a step ahead by offering developers ideas about what they could develop, thus raising curiosity and excitement regarding what technology is capable of achieving.
And that's exactly how a developer's conference should be - driving developer's imagination to create incredible things. This is what Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel, did at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) 2015 held in San Francisco.
IDF-2015
IDF 2015, started with a bang and balloons as attendees were required to push along huge bouncing balloons as a kind of game to open the ceremony.
In the opening keynote speech, Krzanich summarized a vision of the Internet of Things (IoT) - "Computing is everywhere. It's everywhere in our lives today, it's in our bags, our clothes, our homes, our cars. In just about everything we do, computing is there with us".
From the Memomi Mirror which can digitally modify the color and style of the outfit someone is wearing without having to change, (the reflection of which can also be emailed) to the Nabi car seat clip, which enables a parent's phone to emit a warning if they forget their child in the back seat, everything will be connected.
Krzanch also projected that the future of sports will change with implanted technology, providing a demonstration of how "sensors and Intel's tiny Curie module can be imbedded on a BMX bike to provide real-time analytics" .
Rob Enderle, an IDF 2015 attendee said, "In the opening keynote Brian Krzanich walked us through some of the stuff that will be coming to PCs, tablets and smartphones. The event promises a future when our devices can hear and respond to our voice dynamically, they can take the place of controls and musical instruments with no latency, can see and measure what they see, can be worn, can have robots deliver stuff to you-not to mention there will be vending machines that know who you are-and this year, folks even had a shot at getting on a game show".
Apart from the keynote, there were announcements regarding real-world products about to be commercialized by Intel in collaboration with the following companies.
- Vending machine maker, N&W, will launch a smart vending machine across the U.S. that recognizes the sex and age of the user and sends data to the cloud about the time taken for making a selection.
- Fashion brand, Fossil, unveiled an Android Wear smartwatch that looks similar to Moto 360, and smart bracelets to be launched globally in October.
- Intel also announced a deal with producer, United Artists Media Group, for a reality TV show, set to go on air next year. The show - America's Greatest Makers - will offer a $1 million prize to the best developer(s).
Below are the highlights from the Forum-
Intel and Google Create 3D Smartphone Reference Prototype
While Intel's RealSense camera tech senses and scans three-dimensional objects, Google's GOOGL Project Tango sensors are proficient at motion tracking and 3D-mapping. At the IDF, the two companies announced their partnership, under which a smartphone and software kit combining the RealSense and Project Tango technologies was launched. While the handset is only available for developers now, it definitely throws light on what consumer phones could have soon.
Intel Unveiled 'Optane' Brand
Intel announced that it will be shipping SSD-based 3D Xpoint memory developed with Micron MU . According to Intel, 3D Xpoint, a substitute for NAND flash, has 1000x the speed and endurance of present flash storage.
This left many wondering about when 3D Xpoint would reach consumers and in what form. Intel answered the question with the announcement of a brand for 3D Xpoint-based storage products - Optane. The new brand will offer products based on a combination of 3D Xpoint memory, storage controllers and a software stack from Intel.
"Cortana, wake up!"
Co-developed with Microsoft MSFT for Windows 10 Cortana, this technology is constantly active. It lets you ask your suspended Windows 10 PC questions, and have it wake up to give you answers or perform a task.
That is, you can have the PC play music, make appointments and answer questions through voice commands.
In Conclusion
The grand event had a spectacular finish with Krzanich leading a bunch of mechanical spiders in a dance. But to those of us who know what the dance is about; it's called "Ïntel Inside".
