We asked Tiffany about the story behind LightPath Admissions’ founding, what her current day-to-day looks like, and the advice she would give someone starting out on the journey she’s on.
Q: Tell us about your career background. How has it led you to where you are today?
A: My career journey in admissions has been quite an eclectic experience that has uniquely prepared me for my role at LightPath Admissions. It began at Stanford University, where I served as an admissions officer in the electrical engineering department. This role allowed me to develop a keen understanding of the inner workings of top-tier academic institutions and what they seek in prospective students.
During my journey, I expanded my horizons by working at USC Marshall School, where I delved deeper into the intricate landscape of graduate admissions. Later, I decided to go back to Corporate America and I joined McKinsey & Co. as an MBA recruiter. This experience was transformative, providing me with invaluable insights into the qualities that leading consulting firms like McKinsey value in their candidates.
This brought me to start LightPath Admissions. I recognized the need for comprehensive admissions consulting that combines admissions expertise with industry knowledge. The company helps applicants navigate the complex world of admissions, especially for those who are seeking management consulting careers post-graduation.
LightPath Admissions has its roots in a simple idea: making the admissions process more accessible and successful for students at top-tier institutions. My decision to start this journey was driven by a deep passion for education and mentorship. Starting LightPath Admissions felt like the next logical step, allowing me to leverage my admissions expertise and be a valuable resource for those seeking guidance in their pursuit of higher education. It's all about making the admission process more straightforward and accessible for everyone, regardless of their background.
Q: What piece of advice has played the biggest role in your career so far?
A: Actively seek mentorships and never shy away from advice. I've found that many female entrepreneurs have had similar paths and possess a wealth of knowledge that can significantly propel your business. It's essential to understand that you don't have to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship alone. There are seasoned individuals who have been in your shoes and are willing to provide the guidance you need to reach your goals. You can explore mentorship opportunities, become a part of private entrepreneurship communities, consider hiring business consultants, and always remain open to connecting with people within your industry.
Q: Looking back, is there anything that you would change or do differently within your career journey?
A: As I reflect back on my career journey, one pivotal moment stands out: I made the decision to return to graduate school and dive into the realm of higher education. At the time, I wrestled with concerns about the opportunity cost, the possibility of falling behind in my career, and earning potential.
I can say with confidence that this decision was a turning point. The experience I gained in admissions, which stemmed from my venture into higher education, has been instrumental in shaping my journey and the birth of LightPath Admissions. Sometimes, the most unexpected paths lead to amazing opportunities.
Q: In what ways does LightPath Admissions think differently about your industry than others?
A: My unique approach at LightPath Admissions is a result of direct experience behind the scenes at Stanford, USC, and McKinsey in both the admissions and recruiting processes. While many admissions consulting companies have team members with educational backgrounds from prestigious institutions or experience in admissions consulting, our in-depth recruiting experience at top-tier management consulting firms like McKinsey sets us apart.
This combination of insights from academia and the corporate world empowers me to provide a holistic and industry-specific perspective, ensuring that our guidance is finely tuned to meet the expectations of both academic institutions and leading professional firms. This distinct advantage lies in understanding what these institutions seek in their candidates and translating that knowledge into actionable advice for my clients.
Q: What is the most rewarding part about your current role?
A: Being a part of students' journeys and witnessing their dreams come to fruition. It's incredibly fulfilling to guide them through the challenging and often stressful admissions process and see them achieve their academic and career goals. I’ve helped clients secure admissions into top-ranked institutions such as Stanford, INSEAD, University of Chicago, Princeton, UCLA, USC, and many more.
Q: What does your current day-to-day look like?
A: Every day is so different, which makes things so diverse and dynamic. It involves a wide range of activities to provide comprehensive support to our students. This includes one-on-one consultations where I engage with students to understand their academic and career aspirations, meticulously reviewing applications, offering insights and guidance on essays, and interview preparations. I also dedicate time to staying updated on the ever-evolving industry trends to ensure that our advice is current and relevant.
Q: What are the biggest challenges you’re currently facing, and how are you solving them?
A: Learning to distinguish between the right and wrong clients for LightPath Admissions. As the company has evolved, I've come to trust my gut instincts during discovery calls with prospective clients. In most cases, within the first interaction, I can sense whether this will be a mutually beneficial partnership or if it's best to move on from a prospective client.
There's a common misconception that you should take on any and every client. I’ve learned that it's crucial to focus on quality over quantity. It's better to start small and work with clients who align with your values, and for whom you align with theirs. If my intuition raises concerns or there are signs of scope creep, I'm not hesitant to say no. This discernment ensures that we can maintain a high level of service and commitment to clients who genuinely benefit from our expertise and approach.
Q: What advice would you give someone starting out on the journey you’re on?
A: Remember that comparison can be the thief of joy. It sounds absolutely cliche, but there’s so much truth to it. When I was in the initial stages of ideating LightPath Admissions and researching other companies in the same industry, I often felt overwhelmed. I thought there was no way I could scale to their level, considering how successful they had become.
I eventually realized that these companies had started their journey years ago. It took them time, perseverance, and the accumulation of credibility to reach their current level of success. This realization reminds me that I'm at a different stage with my company. Success may take time. But with dedication and the right approach, it's achievable.
