A lot of attention falls on Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Jeff Bezos as leaders in widescale philanthropy. Together, this trio, which includes some of the richest people in the world, have poured billions into charitable causes, helping drive significant progress in health, education, and poverty alleviation.
Understanding where they donate provides insight into efforts like these can hopefully change society for the better in the future.
Jeff Bezos
As the new kid on the block in terms of philanthropy, Bezos has something to prove — especially since critics often compare his efforts to those of Buffett and Gates. Notoriously, Bezos was a holdout on signing the Giving Pledge, an initiative launched by Buffett and Gates that encourages billionaires to donate at least half of their wealth to charitable causes.
However, Bezos has blazed his own path in charitable giving through his Bezos Day One Fund, launched in 2018 by Bezos and his then-wife, Mackenzie Scott. The fund focuses on reducing homelessness and promoting education, giving away hundreds of millions of dollars to related organizations.
In particular, the Day 1 Families Fund makes large donations to groups that help families experiencing homelessness find safe, stable housing. In 2024, the fund awarded $110.5 million to 40 organizations across 23 states to combat homelessness. Meanwhile, the Day 1 Academies Fund focuses on creating and maintaining a network of tuition-free preschools in underserved communities.

These days, Bill Gates’ name is practically synonymous with high-level philanthropy. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, founded in 2000 with his then-wife, Melinda French Gates, is one of the largest charitable organizations in the world.
The foundation has a broad spectrum of global interests, ranging from healthcare and poverty reduction to education and access to information technology in the United States. In 2024 alone, the foundation allocated $8.6 billion across various organizations dedicated to saving and improving lives around the world.
One of the foundation’s key supporters is Warren Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. In 2006, Buffett made a lifetime pledge of his company’s stock to the foundation, then valued at $31 billion.

Buffett is no stranger to cutting checks for billions of dollars. According to Forbes, his lifetime giving exceeds $56 billion, making him one of the most generous philanthropists in history. His donations are so significant that they reportedly dropped him from the eighth-richest person in the world to the 10th.
The Buffett family has also established a number of charitable organizations, notably the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, which has donated roughly $8.4 billion to healthcare initiatives, including an emphasis on reproductive healthcare. The Sherwood Foundation focuses on early childhood education, while the Howard G. Buffett Foundation contributes to groups working on food security and global conflict resolution.

However, by funding efforts that aim to save and improve lives, the philanthropic work of Bezos, Gates, and Buffett offers hope for lasting societal change.
