Today brings central-bank news from both sides of the Atlantic.
The European Central Bank will announce interest rates at 7:45 a.m. ET, followed by President Mario Draghi's press conference 45 minutes later. Economists anticipate he will announce increased stimulus measures.
Initial jobless claims are also due at 8:30 a.m. ET, which are forecast to show that 267,000 Americans sought unemployment benefits for the first time last week.
Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen provides testimony before the congressional Joint Economic Committee at 10 a.m. ET. Her speech will be monitored closely for confirmation of a widely anticipated interest-rate increase at the Fed's Dec. 16 meeting.
The Institute for Supply Management's service-sector index at the same time is expected to come in at 58.3, down from 59.1 in October.
Natural-gas inventories round out the agenda at 10:30 a.m. ET.
Dollar General, Kroger, and Medtronic report quarterly results before the opening bell, and select retailers issue monthly same-store sales. Ambarella, OmniVision Technologies, and Ulta Salon issue results in the afternoon.
Tomorrow's big events are a meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and U.S. non-farm payrolls. Retailer Big Lots and homebuilder Hovnanian announce earnings as well.
