Credit: Shutterstock photoBecton, Dickinson and Company BDX , popularly known as BD, recently announced that its new safety blood collection system -- BD Vacutainer UltraTouch Push Button Blood Collection Set -- has received FDA approval as well as European CE marking. The recognition will allow BD to market the collection set in both the U.S and Europe.
The collection set has been found more patient friendly as compared to other systems. BD Vacutainer UltraTouch uses the company's proprietary PentaPoint Comfort 5-bevel needle technology, which combined with the BD RightGauge technology, reduces penetration force by up to 32% during blood collection process.
The combined technology not only lowers the chances of a painful injection but the usage of a smaller gauge (25 gauge) helps clinicians access a patients veins more effectively. This is particularly valuable for oncology, geriatric and pediatric patient population who often have difficult to locate or delicate veins.
Many clinicians try to avoid using smaller gauge needles owing to possibilities of destroying red blood cells (hemolysis) as the blood passes slowly through the narrow cannula. BD Vacutainer UltraTouch helps clinicians select the most appropriate gauge for patients, without compromising on sample quality and testing accuracy.
Of late, BD has received a number of FDA approvals that expands its product portfolio. FDA recently approved BD FACSPresto system and BD FACSPresto CD4/Hb Cartridge that can be used to detect CD4 T lymphocytes and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration in whole blood samples of HIV/AIDS patients.
The user-friendly device only weighs 6 kilograms and comprises a touchscreen and language-independent user interface. The device uses a proprietary dried reagents cartridge to offer increased stability across a wide range of storage conditions. It can process a maximum of 80 tests in a normal day.
Moreover, products like BD MAX Enteric Parasite Panel (Sep 20Array5) and Vertebral Balloon Systems (Dec 20Array5) expands BD's offerings into new fields like infectious gastroenteritis diagnosis and spine augmentation device markets.
