Credit: In an effort to expand, Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), the cloud business wing of Amazon.com, Inc.AMZN , recently made its Database Migration Service available to all AWS customers.
The cloud giant announced that the AWS Migration Service preview has been used to move more than 1000 databases to the AWS cloud since Jan 01, 2016.
Pegasystems Inc. PEGA , Expedia Inc. EXPE and Thomas Publishing are some of its major clients who have successfully moved on-premises databases to Amazon Aurora and other Amazon RDS engines.
The company's AWS Database Migration Service offers a range of solutions to customers who previously faced cost and complexity issues in moving their databases to the cloud.
It enables customers to migrate terabyte-sized on-premises SQL Server, Oracle and open source databases to the Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) or to a database running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) for a meager cost of $3/TB and with very little or no downtime.
The service allows customers to execute one-time migrations and replications between databases without installing or configuring any additional software. Moreover, the system keeps a check on the status of migration and replication, informs about any network or host failure and automatically assigns a host replacement in case of a failure.
Hal Berenson, Vice President, Relational Database Services, AWS said that customers were repeatedly seeking help in moving their on-premises databases to AWS and other open database engine options, but the response to the AWS Database Migration Service has exceeded expectations. Berenson added that in the preview, one-third of the database migrations used AWS Database Migration Service for moving databases to the AWS Cloud and switching database engines.
