Chemical maker Albemarle Corporation 's ALB business unit - Chemetall - has launched a new water-based penetrant − Britemor 921 (W) − for eco-friendly and process-efficient fluorescent penetrant inspection. Britemor 921 (W) features a very low fluorescent background and superb wash characteristics which create luminous and crisp indications on a broad range of materials, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and non-porous ceramics.

Fluorescent penetrant inspection ("FPI") is a type of dye penetrant inspection where a fluorescent dye is applied to the surface of a non-porous material in order to identify defects of the part in question.

Chemetall's liquid penetrant testing product utilizes water as the main carrier that is stabilized by a unique micro-emulsion technology. These micro-emulsions comprise isotropic liquid mixtures of solvent, water and emulsifier, and are thermodynamically stable. Britemor 921 (W) is less viscous, facilitating low drag force, reducing overall product and rinse water consumption as well as waste treatment costs.

Britemor 921 (W) has good ecological properties owing to its favorable Chemical Oxygen Demand ("COD") and Biological Oxygen Demand ("BOD") values in comparison with current generation products. It is a highly biodegradable product for customers, possessing a very low COD/BOD ratio. The low COD and BOD values also help lower the amount of contaminants in the rinse water, leading to low requirements of activated charcoal in the process to adsorb organic load in the waste water. Moreover, Britemor 921 (W) has a low toxic unit value, providing the opportunity to directly dispose the waste to the drain, abiding by environment authority regulations.

Britemor 921 (W) can also be used with all present water-based developers like PD3, LD9 or as a self-developing process. This helps to avoid the added use and costs of an extra developer product. This technology provides multiple benefits with respect to cost savings, environmental aspects and improved performance, to the automotive components market, general industry foundries and NDT inspection/service companies. It is further labeled as Level 1 technology, in conformity with EN ISO 3452-2.

Albemarle currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Better-ranked companies in the diversified chemical space include Innospec Inc. IOSP , Celanese Corporation CE and LyondellBasell Industries N.V. LYB . While Innospec sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), both Celanese and LyondellBasell carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
