What is MiCA?

The EU passed the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) which went into effect in 2024. The monumental vote set global standards by establishing a regulatory framework that covers crypto-assets, crypto-assets issuers, and crypto-asset service providers.

What is considered a crypto asset by MiCA?

MiCA defines crypto assets as digital representations of value or rights that may be transferred and stored electronically. According to MiCA, crypto assets can be grouped into three categories:

  • Utility Tokens
  • Asset-Referenced Tokens (ARTs)
  • Electronic Money Tokens (EMTs)

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA)

The ESMA introduced MiCA to institute uniform EU market rules for crypto-assets. As the new legal framework which will support market integrity and financial stability by regulating public offers of crypto assets.
