Emerson Electric Co.'sEMR operating arm, Emerson Process Management, recently upgraded its Rosemount 8800 Vortex flowmeters product line by adding a new feature - HART Protocol Revision 7. This apart, the Vortex flowmeter now offers Sensor Signal Strength that will further enhance its productivity.

Diligent commissioning of field devices helps in lowering startup costs and schedule risk for large projects. HART Protocol Revision 7 will help perform this task seamlessly. HART 7 has a Locate Device feature that displays a visible code on the device's LCD screen. This facilitates quick field identification thus making the device more functional and user-friendly.

There is a pressing demand for simplifying the commissioning and start-up processes on large projects as lesser complications mean faster return on investment for clients. This necessitates elimination of guesswork to gauge whether the correct device is being configured or commissioned. Rosemount 8800 Vortex's HART Protocol Revision 7 has been particularly designed for this purpose. Further, HART 7 enhances the flexibility for device configuration, which adds to its commercial appeal.

Emerson Process Management, whose brands include Bettis, DeltaV, Fisher, Micro Motion, Ovation and Rosemount, frequently adds new products and updates existing ones to meet client expectations and expand its customer base. Last month, the company introduced a new Daniel gas ultrasonic flow meter platform that offers two meters and transmitters in a single body to help natural gas operators. We believe steady traction of these products will help in supplementing the top and bottom-line performance of the company in the long run.

Despite the committed efforts of Emerson Process Management, net sales of this segment have been dwindling on account of low order rates stemming from weak global spending in the oil and gas industry. In the first quarter of fiscal 2016, net sales fell about 14% to $1,806 million, with underlying sales declining 11%. Volatility in the oil price may continue to pressurize the company's sales further in the near term.

Emerson currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Some better-ranked stocks in the space include ESCO Technologies Inc. ESE , II-VI Incorporated IIVI and Briggs & Stratton Corporation BGG . All three stocks sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
