IonQ's New Research Shows Up to 14.6% Gains in Engineering Workloads

IonQ IONQ and Synopsys reported early results from research showing that quantum algorithms integrated into mainstream engineering software can accelerate complex industrial design by up to 14.6%. The findings are detailed in the paper End-to-end Performance of Quantum-Accelerated Large-Scale Linear Algebra Workflows, which is one of IonQ’s nine papers accepted at IEEE Quantum Week 2026 and won the first-place Best Paper Award.

The research shows how hybrid quantum computing can address major computational bottlenecks faced by classical supercomputers. Companies designing products — ranging from vehicles and sensors to nuclear reactors — rely on simulations to predict how they will perform under real-world physics. Larger-scale simulations, including virtual crash tests and aerodynamic analysis, can require substantial computing resources to solve systems of equations containing hundreds of millions of variables. Standard computers may generate extra calculations that consume memory and increase processing times, depending on the simulation setup.

To address this, simulation software attempts to reorganize the equations before solving them. In this research, IonQ and Synopsys plugged an advanced quantum algorithm directly into Synopsys' Ansys LS-DYNA simulation software. Instead of relying on time-consuming trial and error to find the best setup, the quantum system rapidly identified the most efficient way to organize the data and avoid unnecessary calculations.

Building on prior research, the team tested the hybrid workflow across complex digital models of an automobile, an industrial drill component, a fluid impeller and a jet engine assembly. The study used meshes with up to 35 million data points. Numerical simulations were conducted on up to 150 qubits, with physical execution validated on IonQ's 36-qubit Forte trapped-ion quantum computer.

The quantum-enhanced sorting method improved runtime by at least 5.9%, reaching 14.6% for complex dynamic simulations. For a digital stress test taking seven days on a classical supercomputer, this could save roughly one day of computing time.

IONQ Peers Update

Rigetti Computing Inc. RGTI announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Rigetti & Co, LLC, secured a $100 million funding award from the U.S. Department of Commerce to advance superconducting quantum computing research and development (R&D). The award was made pursuant to the CHIPS Act. Under the agreement, Rigetti will pursue three R&D projects aimed at addressing key technical bottlenecks in scaling superconducting quantum computing and advancing its roadmap toward utility-scale quantum computing.

Micron Technology, Inc. MU demonstrated its 512GB DDR5 module on multiple server platforms, marking a major milestone in memory innovation. The module vertically stacks DRAM dies interconnected by through-silicon vias to maximize density within individual DRAM packages while preserving the performance modern data center architectures demand. Micron is collaborating closely with leading ecosystem enablers to validate the module across next-generation server platforms.
