Inspire Secures AMA Approval For New Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation Codes

(RTTNews) - Inspire Medical Systems, Inc. (INSP) announced that American Medical Association CPT Editorial Panel has approved a new set of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes covering hypoglossal nerve stimulation procedures that include the company's Inspire V system. The new Category I codes are scheduled to become effective on January 1, 2028.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Inspire's therapy uses hypoglossal nerve stimulation to help keep the airway open during sleep, providing an alternative treatment option for certain patients who cannot tolerate continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy.

According to the company, the newly approved CPT code language specifically addresses implantation of a single lead and an implantable pulse generator (IPG) including the recently launched Inspire V system. Inspire said the dedicated codes are intended to provide a clearer and more consistent framework for coding and reimbursement.

The company believes the updates coding structure could reduce administrative complexity for physicians and hospitals while supporting broader patient access to Inspire therapy. The application received support from several medical organizations, including the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and the Neck Surgery, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and the International Surgical Sleep Society.

With the CPT codes now established, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will begin its standard process for determining reimbursement values for the procedures. CMS typically works with the AMA Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC), which reviews physician work, practical expenses, and other factors before marking recommendations.

Upcoming Milestones

CMS is expected to publish proposed reimbursement valuations for the new CPT codes in July 2027, followed by final valuations in November 2027. The new Category I CPT codes are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2028.

The approval represents a regulatory and reimbursement milestone for Inspire as it continues expanding adoption of its Inspire V hypoglossal nerve stimulation platform.

INSP has traded between $38.91 and $147.03 over the past year. The stock closed Thursday's trading at $70.78, up 2.05%. In after-hours trading the stock is at $70.50, down 0.40%.
