Google Buys Stackdriver - Analyst Blog

Google Inc. ( GOOGL ) recently announced that it has acquired Stackdriver, a startup that offers cloud application monitoring services. The terms and conditions of the deal were not disclosed.

The Stackdriver team will join Google's Cambridge offices. At the initial stage, the startup's monitoring technology will be incorporated into Google's Cloud Platform services. However, Google plans to eventually roll out a number of features of the technology to enable its users to work in a hybrid cloud atmosphere.

Stackdriver, a Boston-based company, was started in 2012 by 2 ex- VMware ( VMW ) employees and offers monitoring-as-a-service to examine the performance of cloud applications. The software identifies any kind of problems in the performance of applications running in the cloud and intelligently solves some of these problems. It also provides details about usage patterns.

Stackdriver is currently valued at $15 million. Last year, the startup raised $10 million with investments from Flybridge Capital Partners and Bain Capital Ventures.

Stackdriver is already providing its monitoring services to popular cloud infrastructure, Amazon 's ( AMZN ) Amazon Web Services ("AWS") and other cloud platforms such as Rackspace ( RAX ) and Google Cloud Engine.

Google wants to enhance its public cloud business and is therefore in the process of adding a host of necessary tools. In particular, the acquisition helps to enhance Google's monitoring features, which have been inadequate thus far.. It also positions Google Cloud Platform more favorably versus other systems such as AWS.

Furthermore, it will help Google achieve a distinctive place in the cloud market, particularly as cloud computing services prices are trending down. There are only a few options available based on the core computer and storage services the companies now provide.

This is not the only acquisition Google made recently. The company also picked up Appetas, a restaurant website creator to increase its foothold in the restaurants space and to compete against the likes of Yelp ( YELP ).
