Can Visa's KYA Push Accelerate Agentic Commerce Adoption?

Visa Inc. V has initiated collaboration with Ant International and Mastercard Incorporated MA to develop an interoperable Know-Your-Agent (KYA) framework. The initiative is aimed at streamlining agent identification and onboarding across card networks, digital wallets, agent platforms and marketplaces while allowing each network to retain its own verification and risk controls.

Each agent would be linked to a validated operator, cardholder or business, while shared certification requirements would assess security and behavior. Continuous transaction monitoring would support ongoing risk evaluation as agents become more active across payment ecosystems. Together, these measures could help scale agentic commerce by creating common trust signals for AI agents that execute transactions on behalf of consumers.

The collaboration builds on V’s Trusted Agent Protocol, MA’s Verifiable Intent and Ant International’s Agentic Mobile Protocol. The companies will work through BuildFin.ai, an industry platform convened by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, to advance common approaches for AI agent verification, accountability and risk management. Greater interoperability could reduce duplicate verification and integration work while supporting faster deployment of agentic services.

For V, the KYA initiative complements its broader push to build infrastructure around AI-driven payments. The company already has Trusted Agent Protocol and Intelligent Commerce solutions aimed at enabling secure agent-initiated transactions. As more issuers, merchants and platforms adopt these capabilities, interoperability could become increasingly important in reducing fragmentation and supporting transaction growth across Visa’s network.

How Are Competitors Faring?

Some of V’s competitors in the fintech space include Mastercard and American Express Company AXP.

Mastercard’s Verifiable Intent framework provides a natural complement to the new KYA initiative, as it is designed to verify user authorization and agent activity across the payment ecosystem. Its integration with Agent Pay could position MA well as industry players work toward common trust standards for agentic commerce.

American Express is building agentic commerce through its ACE developer kit, enabling verified AI agents to use tokenized credentials and authenticated purchase intent. Its Agent Purchase Protection adds another layer of differentiation, extending AXP’s trust and service proposition to agent-led transactions.
