Can PBF's Debt Reduction Strengthen Its Platform for Future Growth?

PBF Energy Inc. PBF is leveraging strong cash generation to strengthen its balance sheet and enhance financial flexibility. In the second quarter of 2026, the company reduced net term debt by more than $1.4 billion and gross term debt by more than $1 billion. PBF repaid borrowings under its asset-backed lending facility and refinanced roughly $802 million of 2028 senior notes. As of June 30, 2026, PBF held approximately $894 million in cash against $855 million of net debt, while its net debt-to-capital ratio, excluding special items, declined to 15%, reflecting a significantly stronger financial position.

Balance-sheet strengthening remains one of the three core pillars of PBF’s capital allocation strategy, alongside reinvestment in the business and shareholder returns. Management views a stronger balance sheet as a way to reduce financial risk and enhance strategic flexibility across refining cycles. The financial flexibility is important as PBF continues investing in refinery reliability, efficiency and operating performance through its refining business improvement (RBI) initiative.

The RBI program generated more than $230 million in run-rate cost improvements in 2025, with PBF targeting more than $350 million by the end of 2026. Meanwhile, the company lowered its 2026 capital-spending guidance to $825-$875 million after shifting certain turnaround activities into 2027. With leverage declining, liquidity strengthening and efficiency initiatives progressing, PBF is improving its financial foundation while maintaining disciplined capital investment. Lower debt, cost savings, and targeted refinery investments give PBF greater flexibility to fund operational improvements and pursue strategic opportunities over the long term.

PARR & DK Are Strengthening Their Balance Sheets

Par Pacific Holdings, Inc. PARR and Delek US Holdings, Inc. DK are taking steps to improve their financial flexibility through debt reduction and refinancing.

In the second quarter of 2026, PARR’s gross term debt was reduced by more than $130 million and ABL borrowings by $78 million, bringing total net debt down by more than $220 million. Management moderated share repurchases to prioritize balance-sheet strength. Delek US, meanwhile, refinanced its term loan from $920-$850 million and reduced standalone net debt by $72 million.

For PARR and DK, lower leverage strengthens financial flexibility and supports continued investment in refinery operations, infrastructure and other strategic initiatives.
