Can EMCOR's Operating Leverage Support Further Profit Growth?

EMCOR Group, Inc. EME is benefiting from a cost structure that is scaling more efficiently as revenues expand. Stronger gross profit performance and tighter overhead management are allowing more revenues to flow through to operating income. This creates an important earnings lever as the business grows, with execution and cost discipline remaining central to maintaining the benefit.

In the second quarter of 2026, revenues increased 19.8% year over year to $5.15 billion. SG&A margin declined 50 basis points to 9.2%, supported by greater revenue absorption and a more efficient cost structure in parts of the business. Gross profit margin expanded 40 basis points to 19.8%, with the improvement driven particularly by Electrical Construction and Building Services. Building Services benefited from a more favorable project mix and improved execution, while restructuring actions lowered overhead costs within its site-based services businesses.

The combined benefit of stronger gross margins and lower SG&A intensity lifted operating margin to 10.6%, up 100 basis points year over year. The improvement shows that revenue growth is translating into higher profitability as fixed and overhead costs are spread across a larger business base. This provides a stronger earnings foundation for the remainder of the year.

The margin improvement also provides a basis for higher full-year expectations. EMCOR raised its operating margin forecast to 9.5-9.8% from 9-9.4%, while full-year earnings are now expected in the band of $32 to $33.25 per share, compared with the previous range of $28.25-$29.75. The higher guidance reflects the stronger profitability achieved in the quarter and the potential for improved cost absorption as revenues expand.

With gross margins improving alongside greater overhead efficiency, EMCOR is converting revenue growth into stronger operating profitability. Maintaining execution and cost discipline should remain important to supporting further profit growth as the company moves through the remainder of the year.

EMCOR and Its Key Infrastructure Competitors

EMCOR competes closely with Quanta Services, Inc. PWR and MasTec, Inc. MTZ in the infrastructure and engineering construction market.

Quanta operates across utility, technology and load center markets, providing electrical, mechanical, civil and fabrication services. The company’s broad capabilities and long-standing customer relationships support its position in large and complex infrastructure projects. Quanta is also expanding across technology, power generation and utility markets, increasing exposure to several major infrastructure investment areas. However, exposure to utility capital spending and the timing of large project awards can affect the pace of growth.

MasTec maintains a diversified infrastructure platform spanning telecommunications, power delivery, clean energy and infrastructure, pipeline and mission-critical construction. This broad exposure allows MasTec to benefit from multiple infrastructure investment themes, including data center development, grid modernization, power generation and natural gas infrastructure. However, project timing across individual end markets can create variability, as seen with near-term deferrals in Communications despite strength across Power Delivery, Pipeline and Clean Energy & Infrastructure.
