Nasdaq IR Intelligence recently conducted research combining natural language processing AI domain expertise and proprietary data from Nasdaq IR Insight. The research uncovers insights issuers can use when planning the content and tone of their earnings calls, ensuring their messages resonate with stakeholders.
Utilizing data from over 2,500 earnings calls over the past 15 months, Nasdaq IR Intelligence sought to understand trends over time between various sectors and across numerous topics. AI tools were employed to understand the frequency and sentiment regarding critical topics such as Covid and financial guidance. As depicted in Figure 1, the research highlights that as vaccination rollouts gained momentum, the themes issuers prioritized, and the sentiment around those themes shifted toward pre-Covid levels. For example, companies once again prioritized innovation, new customers, and ESG themes such as climate.
Nasdaq IR Intelligence identified additional ways companies could action this analysis to improve their messaging. First, the analysis would enable companies to view their language and sentiment in comparison to their competitors. For example, the technology revealed that over 88.5% of the companies discussed guidance, 80% discussed M&A, 88.5% discussed innovation, and 89% discussed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in their Q1 2021 earning calls. Data like this can help companies understand what topics and sentiments are most important to shareholders.
Relevant to all issuers, the ability to benchmark vs. competitors, include the suitable topics and match sentiment to performance are critical elements to optimizing investor communications while drafting prepared remarks, anticipating Q&A topics, and coaching the C-Suite around language or tone. Nasdaq IR Intelligence continues to explore new ways the valuable content and variety of features in IR Insight can deliver new benefits for companies. Head of product James Tickner outlines in his research how this new research can provide Nasdaq clients a leg up.
