Client Spotlight: Emerging Manager Building Brand Awareness in the Institutional Space

    About Shukr Investments

Shukr Investments is a socially responsible global equity manager founded in 2013.  The word “Shukr” means gratitude in the Arabic language as we believe that there is a connection between gratitude and success.

We manage a long-only strategy and differentiate ourselves in three key ways:

    (1) Top-tier performance – Nasdaq eVestment™  shows our strategy as performing in the top 5% of our peers over 3, 5, and 9-year trailing periods.

    (2) Returns with low downside risk – Our strategy has a downside capture ratio below 0.50 since inception (using the MSCI All Country World Index as a benchmark). This means the strategy captures less than 50% of the market’s down moves, on average.

    (3) Charitable giving – We donate 50% of performance fees we generate to charitable causes allocated by our clients. The charities are highly rated and organized around five themes consistent with United Nations SDGs: (1) Poverty, (2) Education, (3) Healthcare, (4) Environment and (5) Well-Being.

What factors do you believe contribute to achieving “Distribution Excellence”?

I believe ‘distribution excellence’ is the ability to reach your target audience consistently, clearly and in an easily accessible way. Distribution excellence encompasses the digital and physical realms and we’ve seen the digital realm becoming more important in the last several years. A firm’s messaging must be easily viewable not only on a website but also on the major social media platforms, and a firm’s products must be visible across multiple databases.

Nasdaq eVestment is instrumental in building our brand with institutional clients. We would not be ‘on the radar’ of so many institutions around the world without Nasdaq eVestment.

What challenges did the firm have in building your brand presence and how does Nasdaq eVestment Omni address this challenge?

Like most new firms, the immediate challenge is building a track record and raising assets. Other challenges include: reaching the right clients, formulating a firm’s social media strategy, and attracting talented people to the firm.

Nasdaq eVestment is instrumental in building our brand with institutional clients. We would not be ‘on the radar’ of so many institutions around the globe without Nasdaq eVestment. The Nasdaq eVestment team help us have a presence on the databases where relevant investors and consultants are, analyze the searches we qualify or don’t qualify for, and educate us on the steps we need to take to improve our chances of winning mandates.

Prior to working with Nasdaq eVestment, we hired a freelancer to update our investment data across multiple databases. While inexpensive, the freelancer did not always update our data uniformly and it meant that we were often missing data or submitting it incorrectly.

Understanding the importance of consistent database population, we felt that it was important to make an investment in this, given many institutional investors would only see us through us being present on these databases.

We wanted a single point of contact that would enable us to be present on all the relevant databases, had extensive experience in database population and was within our budget. Nasdaq eVestment checked all three of these boxes.

The Nasdaq eVestment team helps us have a presence on the databases where relevant investors and consultants are, analyse the searches we qualify or don’t qualify for, and educate us on the steps we need to take to improve our chances of winning mandates.

Why did you pick Nasdaq eVestment?

    1. Team’s expertise
    2. Functionality
    3. Cost of service

What were the most important factors you considered when looking for a database strategy partner?

First, we selected Nasdaq eVestment because of the team’s expertise in distributing our firm and product info across multiple databases. We wanted a firm that had extensive experience in providing data to consultants and investors, and who could help us select the databases relevant asset owners and consultants would be using.

Secondly, Nasdaq eVestment’s functionality was an important factor we considered in our selection process. Not only does the team ensure our strategies are positioned across the databases, but we also gain an edge in shadow searches and are able to quantify our market presence by understanding how often consultants and investors are screening our products. They also monitor trends on data screening and measure our overall completion rates relative to peers for us to gain a competitive edge.

And finally, the cost of the service was another factor we looked at and we were able to work together with the team to find a package that fit our needs.

The fact Nasdaq eVestment already runs one of the largest, if not the largest, databases of investment management products in the world was one key differentiator.

What differentiated Nasdaq eVestment from the other potential options you considered?

The fact Nasdaq eVestment already runs one of the largest (if not the largest) databases of investment management products in the world was one key differentiator among the other firms we considered. Additionally, Nasdaq eVestment offered analytics on our product and target clients, that other firms could not match. Finally, we’ve seen firms like Cambridge and Mercer partner with Nasdaq eVestment to manage their own databases which confirmed the depth of their reach as a key differentiator.

How has Nasdaq eVestment helped you stand out as an Emerging Manager?

Our confidence that Nasdaq eVestment was the right partner has only grown since we signed up. Nasdaq eVestment doesn’t just distribute our data to providers; the team also helps us understand what data we are missing, what searches we came up in, the geographies of users interested in our products and what data we need to provide to increase the likelihood of being considered for the most mandates. In addition, Nasdaq eVestment has shared with us best practices learnt from other firms and connected us to emerging manager conferences which has allowed us to expand our network.
