Zahava Hanuka is a professional in the financial services industry with a passion for photography and creating images that evoke emotion. She was born and raised in Chicago, and now resides in New York City.

How did you get started with photography?

I started taking photos with just my cell phone and had a wild idea to enter a contest with a chance to win an advertisement billboard placement, and I won. That is when I started thinking that this new activity could really be something more.

Choose a favorite photo that you’ve taken and tell the story behind it.

My photo of the boy with his father is one of my favorite shots. What I love about it is that it was a candid moment which could have really been taken anywhere— a moment, that while simple, also represents the great power of human connection. I happened to witness this beautiful interaction between a father and his son. The Dad was being so attentive, and I thought to myself he is a true example of what a role model figure should look like. What’s more, is that this photo possesses that very honest quality of what we do when we think no one is watching. There is nothing more exhilarating for me as a photographer than catching that type of scene.

Why is Instagram your medium of choice?

Instagram is a place where I immediately found a sense of community, and an outlet to share my work with like-minded individuals. Through Instagram I have been able to meet so many people who share my love for photography, and connect with others who love viewing it too. It brings people together in a way I don’t think other platforms necessarily afford.

What are you most excited about for the future?

I look forward to seeing where my vision and inspiration takes me with my picture taking. I look at the evolution of my photography as a constant learning process, and the beauty of it is that it never ends. Finding inspiration through traveling and new surroundings, and being blessed with new opportunities are really what makes me most excited.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

While I love many genres, street photography is my absolute favorite and most passionate form. I am fascinated by seeing different elements come together candidly, the humanity of a moment that can only happen once, and capturing it in the blink of an eye. So really it is people who inspire me more than anything else. New York City and its magical urban elements with diverse individuals is such a wonderful playground for a photographer like myself.

At Nasdaq, we’re working to Rewrite Tomorrow by relentlessly reimagining the markets of today. In what ways are you rewriting the tomorrow of photography?

I think as a photographer, there are always going to be new moments of my own to capture and share. But to me, it is more than that; rewriting the tomorrow of photography is about convincing people to see and think about surroundings in ways they may not have imagined before. And that is exactly what I try to do with my images.

Do you have a favorite place to photograph in New York?

My favorite place to photograph in New York is in SoHo. I enjoy capturing people through windows, as well as in the depths of interesting and tall urban elements, and there is no better neighborhood for this combination of shots than in Soho.
