5 Building Blocks for an App-Powered Portfolio
Last week, App Annie, which specializes in app store analytics, released a list of most downloaded iOS apps of all time. The results showed Facebook, Inc. dominant, which bagged both top spots. CEO Mark Zuckerberg's social network and its messenger app secured first and second place, respectively.
But the significance of studies like this one from App Annie is that they show you where the money's going. According to statistics portal Statista, global mobile app revenues are projected to increase to $76.52 billion by 2017. This may be the right time to look at stocks powered by apps to boost your portfolio.
App Annie has analyzed data from 2010 to come up with these lists. Leading the lineup of apps that have been most downloaded are the Facebook and its messenger app. Google Inc.'s YouTube and Instagram ranked third and fourth on the list. Apps with social networking and sharing features top the list.
But the picture changes radically when it comes to the list of those apps which generate the most revenues. Here, the domination of dating and entertainment apps becomes evident. Topping the list is Internet radio company Pandora Media, Inc. Coming in next are Zoosk and Apple Inc.'s Pages. Also featuring in the top 10 are the likes of Spotify and Microsoft's Skype.
In case of Pandora, the U.S. accounted for nearly all its revenues, while only Skype features on both the most downloaded and revenue lists. Pages, the word processor from Apple, is the lone app which garnered all its revenues from paid downloads.
The other apps on this list are "freemiums," where payments enhance functionality and access to premium features. Of course, Pages has become free since Oct 2013 on iOS, so revenue figures are based on historical collections.
Candy Crush from King Digital Entertainment plc dominates both the revenues and downloads list for games. The now iconic game heads iPhone gaming lists in more than 100 countries and is downloaded millions of times each month. In fact, Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans are the only two games which appear on both lists.
The list of games ranked by all-time worldwide revenue also features Slotomania from Caesars Entertainment Corp. and Electronic Arts Inc.'s The Simpsons: Tapped Out . But downloads don't always translate into revenues. Another mobile gaming favorite Angry Birds , which features twice on the downloads list, doesn't appear on the top revenues lineup.
When you look at the complete picture, taking into account the Android scheme of things, the scenario remains more or less consistent. According to comScore data for July 2015, Facebook, Facebook Messenger and YouTube topped the list for the leading apps. Also featuring on the list of the top 15 were Pandora and Instagram.
Coming in at number 10 was a new contender, Yahoo Stocks from Yahoo! Inc. Meanwhile, Amazon Mobile from Amazon.com Inc. and Twitter, Inc. held the 12 th and 13 th spots respectively.
Power App Your Portfolio
As more and more interactions, both personal and financial move to mobile devices, companies in the Internet sphere will depend on them to deliver revenues. Clearly, apps are here to stay and are expected to become the revenue engines of the future.
