With EPS Growth And More, ANSYS (NASDAQ:ANSS) Is Interesting

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like ANSYS (NASDAQ:ANSS). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

ANSYS's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Impressively, ANSYS has grown EPS by 17% per year, compound, in the last three years. This has no doubt fuelled the optimism that sees the stock trading on a high multiple of earnings.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. ANSYS maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 16% to US$1.7b. That's a real positive.

Are ANSYS Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$32b company like ANSYS. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$111m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!

Does ANSYS Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about ANSYS's strong EPS growth. Further, the high level of insider ownership impresses me, and suggests that I'm not the only one who appreciates the EPS growth. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for ANSYS you should know about.
