Who Has Been Buying Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:ATI) Shares?

We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:ATI).

What Is Insider Selling?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Allegheny Technologies

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when SVP of Finance & CFO Donald Newman bought US$210k worth of shares at a price of US$16.83 per share. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$22.07. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Allegheny Technologies insiders own about US$25m worth of shares. That equates to 0.9% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Allegheny Technologies Insiders?

The fact that there have been no Allegheny Technologies insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. But insiders have shown more of an appetite for the stock, over the last year.
