Whether Up or Down in After-Hours, Intuitive Surgical Typically Adds to Earnings-Driven Gains and Declines in Next Day's Regular Session

Intuitive Surgical ( ISRG ) has over the last 12 years developed a pattern of adding its earnings-driven after-hours trade in the following day's regular session. The company is due with its Q4 results in the after-hours Tuesday, Jan. 24.

ISRG has seen wider follow-on regular session movement on the heels of 32 of its last 48 extended-hours quarterly reports, 67% of the time.

Looking deeper into the performance data, ISRG has recorded an after-hours gain in 26 of the quarters we've tracked, adding to its gains the next day in 19 quarters (73% of the time). The stock has recorded an after-hours decline in 22 quarters, adding to its evening declines in next-day trade in 13 quarters, or 59% of the time.

ISRG is expected to report a Q4 profit of $5.99 per share on revenue of $757 million, according to Capital IQ.

On Oct. 18, 2016, ISRG declined 2.2% in after-hours trade despite beating Q3 expectations. The stock moved lower the next day, closing the Oct. 19 regular session down 5.5%.

On July 19, 2016, ISRG advanced 6.6% in night trade after beating Q2 Street estimates. It narrowed its upside the next day, closing the July 20 regular session up 4.6%.

On April 19, 2016, ISRG gained 2.1% in after-hours trade on the back of better-than-expected Q1 results. The stock moved higher the following day, closing the April 20 regular session up 3.3%.

On Jan. 21, 2016, ISRG advanced 1.4% in night trade after beating Q4 estimates. The stock added modestly to its upside the next day, closing the Jan. 22 regular session up 1.9%.

On Oct. 20, 2015, ISRG gained 7.7% in after-hours trade after topping Q3 earnings expectations. It cut its upside the next day, closing the Oct. 21 regular session up 5.5%.
