"Congrats!" comments Facebook's ( FB ) CEO Mark Zuckerberg, whose company bought WhatsApp for $19 billion is assorted assets back in February of last year . Zuckerberg then follows up by sharing a photo of Koum with the comment "Here's an action shot of you writing this update."
Since the acquisition, WhatsApp's monthly active users have been steadily climbing. In August of last year, the messaging app had 600 million active users, which increased to 700 million active users this past January, which increased, again, to 800 million active users this past April.
The rapid increase in active users is one of the reasons why Facebook acquired WhatsApp. PCMag.com quotes Mr. Zuckerberg regarding the growth of the messaging app: "WhatsApp is on the path to connect 1billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable."
Facebook does have its own messaging app as well, "Messenger," which has been downloaded more than 1 billion times as of this past June. This means that Facebook related messaging apps are on close to, if not exceeding, 2 billion mobile devices.
Facebook is currently trading down less than 1% on the day and holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) figure.
