Weekly ETF Fund Flows: US Equities Shine
U.S. equities ETFs were some of the most popular funds with investors in the past week, with the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEArca:SPY) leading the pack in terms of asset gathering, as the stock market rallied to new highs.
The Dow Jones industrial average broke record after record in the past week ended Thursday, March 7, rallying every single one of the past five sessions to post closings that reached uncharted territory for the widely watched benchmark first envisioned by Charles Dow in 1896. In all, the Dow gained nearly 2 percent in the week, tagging on 275 points to close at its highest level ever Thursday at 14,329.49.
The S&P 500 came within roughly 20 points of its record closing of 1,565.15 reached back in 2007, gaining some 2 percent in the week, while the Nasdaq hit levels not seen in 12 years.
SPY, the largest ETF in the world, attracted $1.84 billion in new net assets, while the iShares Core S&P 500 Index Fund (NYSEArca:IVV) snagged $1.37 billion in the week. In all, investors poured $4.60 billion into U.S. equities ETFs in the past five days, helping push total U.S.-listed ETF assets to $1.446 trillion.
The iShares MSCI Japan Index Fund (NYSEArca:EWJ) was another ETF that ranked high with investors, who continued to look for access to Japan's recovery story. EWJ is the market's largest Japan-focused ETF, and now boasts $6.4 billion in assets.
On the flip side, gold funds were again out of favor this week, as investors continued to focus on improving economic data and a rising U.S. dollar.
The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEArca:GLD) bled more than $580 million in the past five-day period, while the PowerShares DB Gold (NYSEArca:DGL) saw net outflows of $215 million. Altogether, investors took some $822 million out of commodities ETFs.
