Weekly ETF Fund Flows: EEM, VWO Bleed
Emerging market ETFs were some of the least popular strategies in the week ended Thursday, May 30, as investors trimmed their overall exposure to international equities while the U.S. stock market inched higher, albeit slowly.
The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index Fund (NYSEArca:EEM) saw the week's biggest redemption, bleeding $1.22 billion, or roughly 2.78 percent of its assets, now totaling $42.86 billion. Its main competitor, the Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF (NYSEArca:VWO), lost $500 million in the period, bringing its total assets down to $56.12 billion.
These two funds-the behemoths of broad emerging market exposure for U.S. ETF investors-have been on a losing streak much of the year. EEM has already lost a net of $3.6 billion since Jan. 1, while VWO has seen net outflows of nearly $1.3 billion year-to-date.
Another emerging market ETF that got caught among the week's biggest redemptions was the iShares MSCI Brazil Capped Index Fund (NYSEArca:EWZ)-the market's biggest Brazil-focused fund, with $6.4 billion in total assets. EWZ has now seen net outflows of $2.5 billion since the beginning of the year.
In all, investors took some $1.8 billion out of international equities ETFs in the past week ended Thursday, outflows that nearly identically matched the amount of net inflows into U.S. equities ETFs, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse. Still, total U.S.-listed ETF assets dropped to $1.518 trillion.
The asset flows came as the S&P 500 tagged on modest gains of 0.2 percent on the week, which included Monday's Memorial Day holiday, even if it failed to retest last week's record intraday high of 1,687.18. The index closed Thursday at 1,654.41.
Funds like the iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (NYSEArca:IWM) and the Financial Select SPDR (NYSEArca:XLF) were among the most popular, raking in a net of $801 million and $397 million, respectively, in the past week.
The only international equities ETF that ranked among the week's top creations was the WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity ETF (NYSEArca:DXJ), which had net inflows of $247 million. As of Thursday, DXJ's total assets had slipped to $9.92 billion.
