Waters Corp.WAT recently boosted its TA Instruments division, one of the two operating segments, by unveiling a new line of scanning calorimeters at the 2016 Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy ("Pittcon").

Further, the company recently showcased its revamped portfolio of CORTECS Solid-Core LC Columns at the conference. Also, Waters notified clients that its proprietary GlycoWorks technology has achieved unprecedented sales within the first year of launch. The introduction of new innovative products has been a strategic measure adopted by Waters to drive growth.

Inside the Headlines

Precisely, Waters introduced the calorimeters, Discovery DSC 2500, DSC 250 and DSC 25, all of which are built on the TA Fusion Cell technology. As the TA Fusion Cell technology combines Q-Series, first generation Discovery DSC Tzero technology and new proprietary manufacturing processes, it is expected to drive superior quality performance in thermal analysis laboratories.

These calorimeters can be deployed in a gamut of applications ranging from material science to biomaterials and can also be used in both research environments and production control processes. Moreover, the Discovery DSC calorimeters have additional features like new TRIOS software, app-style user interface and enhanced sensing technologies that will improve performance while analyzing baseline flatness, sensitivity, resolution and reproducibility.

Separately, Waters has expanded its proprietary CORTECS Columns family through the inclusion of two new LC column chemistries - CORTECS C8 and CORTECS Phenyl. Leveraging on the competence of solid-core particle technology, these offerings will aid researchers in enhancing the speed, resolution and sensitivity while dealing with small molecule HPLC, UHPLC or UPLC separations. While CORTECS C8 Columns has been engineered to separate tough hydrophobic compounds, CORTECS Phenyl Columns will be helpful in analyzing aromatic compounds.

Also, Waters revealed that within the first year of availability, the GlycoWorks RapiFluor-MS N-Glycan Kit has saved biopharmaceutical laboratories about four years of work. Glycan analyses forms the backbone of major technological advances in the pharmaceutical industry and Waters' GlycoWorks RapiFluor-MS N-Glycan Kit (in collaboration with Waters' ACQUITY UPLC System, the ACQUITY UPLCFLR Detector and the ACQUITYQDa Detector) speeds up this process by analyzing released N-glycans and deciphering structural information.

To Conclude

Waters has an active research and development division that is primarily focused on the development and commercialization of products that complement as well as update its existing offerings. Meanwhile, the company's TA division sales surged 16% in the fourth quarter of 2015 on the back of its successful technology offerings and acquired products. We believe that the latest products will broaden the customer base at the TA Division and also bodes well for growth. Also, expansion of the Cortex columns will help the company widen its footprint in the global pharma space which has emerged as a major revenue driver over the past few quarters.

Waters currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Better-ranked stocks within the sector are Bruker Corporation BRKR , MTS Systems Corporation MTSC and Newport Corp. NEWP , each sporting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
