Wall Street Starts Year With Gains as Energy, Tech Shares Rally

Stocks started the new year on a firm footing Tuesday, with strong gains in Walt Disney ( DIS ) lifting the Dow Jones Industrial Average while the Nasdaq Composite outperformed the benchmarks amid gains in biotech and information technology names.

On the Standard & Poor's 500, six of the 11 sectors were in the green in late trading, with energy leading, as natural gas prices jumped amid cold weather and a storm approaching the east. Chevron ( CVX ) and Exxon Mobil ( XOM ) were also among the Dow's best performers. Health, materials and consumer discretionary stocks all advanced more than 1% into the bell.
