Wall Street sank on Thursday, with equities on the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 skidding for the fourth time in five days as a ratcheting up of trade tension hit investor sentiment and prompted retaliation by U.S. allies.

The Dow's triple-digit loss was led by losses across multiple sectors, with Procter & Gamble ( PG ), Caterpillar ( CAT ), Walmart ( WMT ) and Verizon ( VZ ) among the sharpest decliners. On the S&P, consumer staples and industrials shed the most into the close, but almost all sectors were in the red. A slim gain in information technology helped the Nasdaq Composite keep its own losses in check.
