US Market Indexes Lower With Increased Trading Volatility

U.S. market indexes were lower Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,753.31 for a loss of -234.25 points or -1.07%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,457.85 for a loss of -18.70 points or -0.76%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,375.57 for a loss of -59.76 points or -0.93%. The VIX Volatility Index increased to 12.45 for a gain of 2.32 points or 22.90%.

Tuesday's market movers

Stocks reported their worst trading day in three weeks. Trading volatility was higher with the VIX Volatility Index increasing 22.90%. Investors were concerned about North Korea and a lack of political policy progress.

U.S. factory orders were the main economic focus for the day. Factory orders decreased by -3.3%.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

United Technologies ( UTX ) -5.69%

Travelers ( TRV ) -3.73%

Goldman Sachs ( GS ) -3.59%

JPMorgan ( JPM ) -2.39%

In the broad market, financial stocks led losses followed by materials and industrials.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,399.66 for a loss of -13.92 points or -0.98%. The S&P 600 closed at 837.93 for a loss of -9.12 points or -1.08%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,568.72 for a loss of -69.11 points or -0.80%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,396.07 for a loss of -139.70 points or -1.47%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,718.34 for a loss of -19.45 points or -1.12%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,086.74 for a loss of -8.51 points or -0.78%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,453.70 for a loss of -11.75 points or -0.80%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,361.85 for a loss of -10.80 points or -0.79%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 656.21 for a loss of -3.39 points or -0.51%.
