The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5600.96 for a gain of 48.01 points or 0.86%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 11.07 for a loss of -0.70 points or -5.95%.

Fourth quarter corporate earnings helped stocks on Tuesday. Economic reports affecting trading included the following:
- The PMI Manufacturing Index increased to 55.1 from 54.2.
- Existing Home Sales decreased to 5.490 million SAAR.
