US Market Indexes Higher on Monday

U.S. market indexes were mostly higher on Monday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21479.27 for a gain of 129.64 points or 0.61%. The S&P 500 closed at 2429.01 for a gain of 5.60 points or 0.23%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6110.06 for a loss of -30.36 points or -0.49%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 11.22 for a gain of 0.04 points or 0.36%.

Monday's market movers

The stock market closed at 1 p.m. for the Fourth of July holiday. Trading was light to start the first day of the second half of the year. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Auto sales for June were released. Auto sales are reportedly lower than May. Approximately three-quarters of sales have been reported and the consensus is for total vehicle sales of 16.6 million.
  • The PMI Manufacturing Index was reported at 52, a decrease from 52.7 and below consensus of 52.2.
  • The ISM Manufacturing Index was reported at 57.8. Prior was 54.9 and consensus was 55.1.
  • Construction spending was unchanged for the month. Construction spending increased 4.5% year over year.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Goldman Sachs ( GS ) 2.42%

Chevron Corp. ( CVX ) 1.89%

DuPont ( DD ) 1.76%

ExxonMobil ( XOM ) 1.70%

General Electric ( GE ) 1.63%

In the broad market, energy and financial stocks led gains. Technology stocks were lower with S&P 500 technology sector down -0.69%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1426.68 for a gain of 11.32 points or 0.80%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 863.34 for a gain of 7.49 points or 0.88%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8588.78 for a gain of 36.52 points or 0.43%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9659.83 for a gain of 112.27 points or 1.18%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1758.04 for a gain of 11.39 points or 0.65%; the S&P 100 Index closed at 1070.50 for a gain of 2.79 points or 0.26%; the Russell 3000 Index closed at 1441.00 for a gain of 4.18 points or 0.29%; Russell 1000 Index closed at 1346.86 for a gain of 3.34 points or 0.25%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index closed at 663.93 for a gain of 3.08 points or 0.47%.
