US Market Indexes Continue to Report Losses on Tuesday

U.S. market indexes were lower on Tuesday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21136.23 for a loss of -47.81 points or -0.23%. The S&P 500 closed at 2429.33 for a loss of -6.77 points or -0.28%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6275.06 for a loss of -20.63 points or -0.33%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 10.45 for a gain of 0.38 points or 3.77%.

Tuesday's market movers

Stocks continued to report losses on Tuesday. No leading economic reports were released. Investors continued to follow the U.K. election and the testimony of the former FBI director.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

Wal-Mart ( WMT ) -1.66%

Boeing ( BA ) -1.16%

Travelers ( TRV ) -1.08%

McDonald's ( MCD ) -1.02%

In the broad market, consumer discretionary stocks led losses. Technology stocks were also lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.19%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1394.90 for a loss of -1.55 points or -0.11%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 844.96 for a loss of -1.05 points or -0.12%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8462.90 for a gain of 0.22 points or 0.01%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9431.98 for a loss of -42.87 points or -0.45%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1737.05 for a loss of -6.57 points or -0.38%; the S&P 100 Index at 1071.62 for a loss of -2.38 points or -0.22%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1437.82 for a loss of -3.95 points or -0.27%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1346.12 for a loss of -3.88 points or -0.29%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 658.90 for a loss of -3.67 points or -0.55%.
