TSX Turns Slightly Higher, Up 8 Points at Midday, As Healthcare Offsets Resource Stocks

Canada's benchmark index moved into the positive territory, edging up by 8 points at midday to 15,281.94, as healthcare stocks helped offset weakness in resource issues.

The TSX has been in a choppy trading since opening higher at 15,309.87, as investors weigh the impact of recent developments in the Ukraine-Russia situation. After sending aid to eastern Ukraine, reports said that Russia was denied entry to the Ukrainian border by officials. Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov was even cited as saying: "Provocation by a cynical aggressor is not permissible on our territory."

Meanwhile, healthcare was the biggest gainer, amassing 1.31%, with Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX.TO) rising 1.86%. Info tech was also a notable gainer, up 0.44%.

On the other hand, miners and energy were down 0.22% and 0.20%, respectively, hit by falling gold and crude oil prices . Industrials lost 0.24%.

So far, more than 128 million shares have changed hands. Merus Labs (MSL.TO) was the most heavily traded stock.
