TSX Turns Green, Up 27 Points Mid-Afternoon; Healthcare, Info Tech Extend Rally, Energy Swings to Gain

The TSX was ahead by 27 points in the mid-afternoon session, erasing earlier losses, as healthcare and info tech stocks continued to advance and the energy group turned positive.

The healthcare sector was up 4.82%, as Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX.TO) reached an all-time high on the back of financial results and an agreement to buy bowel drug maker Salix Pharmaceuticals. Info tech, on the other hand, surged 2.10%, with Macdonald Dettwiler & Associates (MDA.TO) hitting record highs due to an outperform rating and higher target price from BMO Research.

In resources, energy swung to a small gain of 0.12% after Brent oil prices recovered and edged up 0.38% above the US$60 per barrel mark. Miners, however, were sill in the red, sliding 1.18%, with gold prices down 0.26% at US$1,201.80 an ounce.

Financials dropped 1.26%.

Over 206 million shares have changed hands so far. Bombardier (BBD-B.TO) remains the most actively traded stock.
