TSX Swings Between Gains, Losses, Up 11 Points Mid-Afternoon; Financials Turn Positive, Miners Pare Earlier Loss

The TSX swung between gains and losses on Tuesday and was up by 11 points mid-afternoon. It was down by 4 points at midday.

Still limiting gains, however, were economic data from Canada's trading partners, U.S. and China. The world's largest economy reported retail sales barely rose in April, while the Asian giant showed even more signs of a slowdown in its economy, with data from output to investment and consumption missing expectations.

Miners were still in the red, down 0.3%, but have improved slightly compared to midday. Industrials and utilities failed to recover and were off 0.4% and 0.3%, respectively.

In the positive zone, financial stocks turned to a 0.03% gain. Healthcare remained as the strongest sector, up 0.6%, along with energy.
