Last week's U.S. jobs numbers left investors wondering about the U.S. Federal Reserve's next move regarding its monetary policy. Canada's largest trading partner, on Friday, reported a gain in jobs in March but is still short of the market's expectations.

The healthcare and info tech sectors led the broad decline, down 2.5% and 2.1%, respectively. Mining and energy stocks slipped 0.7% and 1.1%, respectively, with the prices of oil and the bullion dropping.

Telecom remained as the only gaining sector, up 0.4%.
