The TSX gave back some of its earlier gains after healthcare and info tech shares extended their decline. The benchmark index was up 32 points in the mid-afternoon session.

Commodity prices benefited after the dollar took a beating from weak U.S. services sector data. Also helping commodities, China, a major energy and industrial metal consumer, said the Caixin services purchasing managers index rose to 52.4 in January, from 50.2 in December.

The mining and energy groups were ahead 5.1% and 2.2%, respectively. On the other side, healthcare shed 2% while info tech retreated 1.%.

Total volume traded already exceeded 308 million shares. Telesta Therapeutics (TST.TO) was the most actively traded stock.
