Toronto's main stock index gained almost 200 points with energy issues buoyed by strong manufacturing data from China and financials buoyed by yesterday's strong quarterly result and dividend hike from National Bank (NA.TO), which hit a new year high of $70.09.

Boosting the index too were the two most actively traded stocks, Eastern Platinum Limited (ELR.TO) and Baja Mining Corp. (BAJ.TO).

Eastern Platinum Ltd. (ELR.TO) gained almost 10% with more than 14 million shares traded, although there was no apparent fresh news driving it.

Baja Mining rose 3 cents to $1.18 with more than 12.1 million shares having changed hands, making it one of the most actively traded on the TSX - although there was no apparent fresh news to move it. Baja on November 23 announced that its Boleo Project is now fully funded for construction following Baja's recently completed US$858 Million project financing and C$184 Million bought deal financing.
