TSX Follows Energy, Materials Lower; Sheds 38 Points Mid-Afternoon
The TSX fell further in the mid-afternoon session, dragged down by wider losses in energy and materials stocks, which overshadowed modest gains in utilities and healthcare. The benchmark index retreated 38 points close to a session low of 15,121.75.
The energy group eased 1.26%, as the downward trend in oil prices remained due to renewed concerns over oil supply. Brent crude was down 0.54% at US$65.04 per barrel, while WTI slipped 0.35% to US$59.18 a barrel. The materials sector, on the other hand, tumbled 1.22%, with gold and copper still trading in the negative territory.
Gains in utilities and healthcare shares were trimmed to 0.22% and 0.44%, respectively.
Total volume traded so far exceeded 169.8 million shares. Connacher Oil and Gas (CLL.TO) was the most actively traded stock.
