TSX Closes at Highest Level of Day, Up 100 Pts From Day Lows; Energy Stocks Give Life, Financials Weigh

Toronto's main stock index closed at its highest level of the day, up around 25 points, after spending most of the session in negative territory. Indeed, the overall market was more than a 100 points below its eventual closing level after about 30 minutes of trading this morning, and it only turned positive with about 90 minutes left.

The energy sector was a leading advancer, despite a drop in crude oil prices. Financials weighed after the release of bank results that failed to catch the imagination of many analysts and investors.

Market watchers now await the release of Q2 earnings tomorrow from Royal Bank (RY.TO). Wescast Industries Inc. (WCS-A.TO) is also slated to release its Q1 on Friday.
